Chap. 39. An ACT to amend the Code of Virginia by adding to chapter 1/9
thereof thirteen new sections numbered 2726-m to 2726-y, both inclusiv:,
vesting in boards of supervisors power to cause county buildings to le
insured, to provide suitable rooms for county purposes and to determiie
what allowances payable out of county treasuries shall be made to sherif s
and clerks, and to repeal sections 2726 and 2726-a to 2726-1, both inclusi:e
relating to the same matters. [SB 1]

I. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That the Coce
of Virginia be amended by adding to chapter one hundred and nire
thereof thirteen new sections numbered twenty-seven hundred and
twenty-six-m, twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-n, twenty-seven
hundred and twenty-six-o, twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-"),
twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-q, twenty-seven hundred and
twenty-six-r, twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-s, twenty-seven
hundred and twenty-six-t, twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-11,
twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-v, twenty-seven hundred and
twenty-six-w, twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-x, twenty-seve 1
hundred and twenty-six-y, which new sections shall read as follows:
Section 2726-m. Providing temporary offices, insuring building ,,
fixing allowance to officers—The board shall have power to cause
the county buildings to be insured in the name of the board of supe: -
visors of said county and their successors in office, for the benefit cf
the county, if they deem it expedient; and if there are no publc
buildings, to provide temporary suitable rooms for the county pw-
poses; to determine what annual allowance, payable out of the county
treasury, shall be made severally to the sheriff and county clerks cf
their respective counties; so that, in counties containing a populatio1
of ten thousand and less, the allowance to each of said officers sha 1
not be less than three hundred dollars nor exceed six hundred do -
lars ; in counties containing ten and less than fifteen thousand, not less
than four hundred dollars nor more than seven hundred dollars; i1
counties containing fifteen and less than twenty thousand, not less tha1
five hundred dollars nor more than eight hundred dollars; and in cout -
ties containing twenty and less than thirty thousand, not less than six
hundred dollars nor more than nine hundred dollars; and in counties
containing thirty thousand and less than forty thousand, not less thai
seven hundred dollars nor more than one thousand dollars; and i1
counties containing over forty thousand, not less than a thousand do -
lars nor more than fifteen hundred dollars; and in counties containin z
over fifty thousand, not less than twelve hundred dollars nor more thai
fifteen hundred dollars, all of which specified allowance shall be sut -
ject to the provisions contained in the twelve sections next followin;;,
and numbered twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-n to twenty-seven
hundred and twenty-six-y, both inclusive.
Section 2726-n. Provided that the annual allowances to be made
by the boards of supervisors in the counties hereinafter in this sec-
tion mentioned, to the sheriffs and clerks of said counties, respectively,
shall be as follows: in the county of Accomac, to the sheriff and clerk
severally not less than one thousand dollars nor more than fifteen hun-
dred dollars; in the county of Albemarle, to the sheriff and clerk sev-
erally, not less than twelve hundred dollars nor more than fifteen
hundred dollars; in the county of Arlington, to the sheriff not more
than two thousand dollars and to the clerk not more than one thou-
sand dollars; in the county of Alleghany, to the sheriff not less than
fifteen hundred dollars nor more than twenty-five *-undred dollars, and
to the clerk not less than seven hundred dollars n r more than fifteen
hundred dollars; in the county of Amelia, to the sheriff and clerk
severally, not less than six hundred dollars nor more than one thou-
sand dollars; in the county of Appomattox, to the sheriff not less
than six hundred dollars nor more than nine hundred dollars, and to
the clerk not less than one thousand dollars nor more than fifteen
hundred dollars.
Section 2726-0. Provided that the annual allowance to be made by
the boards of supervisors in the counties hereinafter in this section
mentioned, to the sheriffs and clerks of said counties, respectively,
shall be as follows: in the county of Bath, to the sheriff not less than
five hundred dollars nor more than one thousand dollars, and to the
clerk not less than seven hundred and fifty dollars nor more than
seventeen hundred and fifty dollars; in the county of Bedford, to
the sheriff and clerk severally, not less than seven hundred nor more
than twelve hundred dollars; in the county of Bland, to the sheriff
and clerk severally, not less than four hundred dollars nor more than
eight hundred dollars; in the county of Botetourt, to the sheriff not
less than twelve hundred dollars nor more than two thousand dollars;
and to the clerk not more than twelve hundred dollars; in the county
of Brunswick, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not less than one
thousand dollars and not more than fifteen hundred dollars; in the
county of Buchanan, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not less than
one thousand dollars nor more than fifteen hundred dollars; in the
county of Buckingham, to the sheriff not less than eight hundred dol-
lars nor more than twelve hundred dollars, and to the clerk not less
than one thousand dollars nor more than fifteen hundred dollars.
Section 2726-p. Provided that the annual allowances to be made by
the boards of supervisors in the counties hereinafter in this section
mentioned, to the sheriffs and clerks of said counties, respectively, shall
be as follows: in the county of Campbell, to the sheriff and clerk sev-
erally, not less than one thousand dollars nor more than fourteen hun-
dred dollars; in the county of Caroline, to the sheriff and clerk sev-
erally, not less than eight hundred dollars nor more than twelve hun-
dred dollars; in the county of Carroll, to the sheriff not less than eight
hundred dollars nor more than one thousand dollars, and to the clerk
not less than seven hundred dollars nor more than twelve hundred
dollars; in the county of Charlotte, to the sheriff and clerk severally,
not less than seven hundred dollars nor more than fifteen hundred d)l-
lars; in the county of Charles City, to the sheriff and clerk severally,
not less than six hundred dollars nor more than twelve hundred dolla:'s;
in the county of Chesterfield, to the sheriff and clerk severally, 1.0t
less than one thousand dollars nor more than fifteen hundred dolla:s;
in the county of Clarke, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not 1:ss
than five hundred dollars nor more than eight hundred dollars; in
the county of Craig, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not less than
five hundred dollars nor more than seven hundred and fifty dolla‘s;
in the county of Culpeper, to the sheriff not less than four hundied
dollars nor more than one thousand dollars, and to the clerk of ihe
circuit court not less than four hundred dollars and not more than
twelve hundred dollars; in the county of Cumberland, to the sheriff
not less than six hundred dollars nor more than one thousand dollars,
and to the clerk not less than eight hundred dollars nor more ilan
fifteen hundred dollars.
Section 2726-q. Provided that the annual allowance to be made by
the boards of supervisors in the counties hereinafter in this section
mentioned, to the sheriffs and clerks of said counties, respectively, st all
be as follows: in the county of Dickenson, to the sheriff and clerk si-v-
erally, not less than one thousand dollars, nor more than fifteen hi n-
dred dollars; in the county of Dinwiddie, to the sheriff and clerk
severally, not less than six hundred dollars nor more than twelve hi n-
dred dollars; in the county of Elizabeth City, to the sheriff not mure
than sixteen hundred dollars and to the clerk not more than eighteen
hundred dollars; in the county of Essex, to the sheriff not less than
three hundred dollars nor more than nine hundred dollars and to -he
clerk not less than one thousand dollars nor more than twelve hi n-
dred dollars; in the county of Franklin, to the sheriff and clerk si-v-
erally, not more than twelve hundred dollars; in the county of Fair-

Section 2726-r. Provided that the annual allowances to be made by
the boards of supervisors in the counties hereinafter in this sect:on
mentioned, to the sheriffs and clerks of said counties, respectively, st all
be as follows: in the county of Grayson, to the sheriff and clerk si-v-
erally, not less than eight hundred dollars nor more than twelve hi n-
dred dollars; in the county of Greene, to the sheriff and clerk severa ly,
not less than five hundred dollars nor more than nine hundred dolla:s;
in the county of Greensville, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not 1:ss
than eight hundred dollars nor more than twelve hundred dollars; in
the county of Giles, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not less than
seven hundred dollars nor more than twelve hundred dollars; in the
county of Gloucester, to the sheriff not less than seven hundred and

county of Henrico, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not less than

Section 2726-s. Provided that the annual allowances to be made by
the boards of supervisors of the counties hereinafter in this section
mentioned, to the sheriffs and clerks of said counties, respectively, shall
be as follows: in the county of Isle of Wight, to the sheriff not less
than one thousand dollars nor more than fifteen hundred dollars, and
to the clerk not more than twelve hundred dollars; in the county of
James City, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not less than eight hun-
dred dollars nor more than twelve hundred dollars; in the county of
King and Queen, to the sheriff not less than three hundred dollars
nor more than nine hundred dollars, and to the clerk not less than
one thousand dollars nor more than twelve hundred dollars; in the
county of King George, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not less
than seven hundred dollars nor more than one thousand dollars; in the
county of King William, to the clerk not less than seven hundred
and fifty nor more than twelve hundred dollars and to the sheriff
not less than six hundred dollars nor more than nine hundred dollars ;
in the county of Lancaster, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not less
than nine hundred dollars; in the county of Lee, to the sheriff and
clerk severally, not less than eight hundred dollars nor more than
twelve hundred dollars; in the county of Lunenburg, to the sheriff
and clerk severally, not less than six hundred dollars nor more than
one thousand dollars; in the county of Louisa, to the sheriff and clerk

Section 2726-t. Provided that the annual allowances to be made by
the boards of supervisors in the counties hereinafter in this section
mentioned, to the sheriffs and clerks of said counties, respectively, shall
be as follows: in the county of Madison, to the sheriff not less than
one thousand dollars nor more than twelve hundred dollars, and to
the clerk not less than twelve hundred dollars nor more than fi teen
hundred dollars; in the county of Mathews, to the sheriff not less than
nine hundred dollars nor more than eleven hundred dollars, ard «o
the clerk not less than eleven hundred dollars nor more than - ou--
teen hundred dollars; in the county of Mecklenburg, to the sherifi ard
clerk severally, not less than twelve hundred dollars nor more then
eighteen hundred dollars; in the county of Middlesex, to the sl eriff
not less than three hundred dollars nor more than nine hundred dcl-
lars, and to the clerk not less than one thousand dollars nor no--e

Section 2726-u. Provided that the annual allowances to be mace by
the boards of supervisors in the counties hereinafter in this section
mentioned, to the sheriffs and clerks of said counties, respectively, shzl
be as follows: in the county of Nansemond, to the sheriff and clerk
severally, not less than one thousand dollars nor more than fifteen
hundred dollars; in the county of Nelson, to the sheriff and clerk sev-
erally, not less than five hundred dollars nor more than twelve hu:1-
dred dollars; in the county of New Kent, to the sheriff and clerk sev-
erally, not less than six hundred dollars nor more than twelve hut dred
dollars; in the county of Norfolk, to the sheriff and clerk seve-ally,
not less than fifteen hundred dollars nor more than twenty-five hua-
dred dollars; in the county of Northumberland, to the sheriff and cle-k
severally, not less than seven hundred dollars nor more than one ho1-

Section 2726-w. Provided that the annual allowances to be made by
the boards of supervisors in the counties hereinafter in this section
mentioned, to the sheriffs and clerks of said counties, respectively, shall
be as follows: in the county of Rappahannock, to the sheriff not less
than six hundred dollars nor more than nine hundred dollars, and to
the clerk not less than eight hundred dollars nor more than fifteen
hundred dollars; in the county of Richmond, to the sheriff and clerk
severally, not less than seven hundred dollars nor more than one thou-
sand dollars; in the county of Roanoke, to the sheriff and clerk sev-
erally, not less than seven hundred dollars nor more than twelve hun-
dred dollars; in the county of Rockbridge, to the sheriff and clerk sev-
erally, not less than seven hundred dollars nor more than fifteen hun-
dred dollars; in the county of Rockingham, to the sheriff and clerk
severally, not less than one thousand dollars nor more than fifteen
hundred dollars; in the county of Russell, to the sheriff and clerk

Section 2726-x. Provided that the annual allowances to be made by
the boards of supervisors in the counties hereinafter in this section
mentioned, to the sheriffs and clerks of said counties, respectively, shall
be as follows: in the county of Scott, to the sheriff and clerk severally,
not less than one thousand dollars nor more than fifteen hundred dol-
lars; in the county of Smyth, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not less
than twelve hundred dollars nor more than fifteen hundred dollars;
in the county of Sussex, to the sheriff, not less than one thousand
dollars nor more than fifteen hundred dollars, and to the clerk not
less than eight hundred dollars nor more than twelve hundred dollars ;
in the county of Spotsylvania, to the clerk not less than seven hundred
nor more than fifteen hundred dollars; in the county of Surry, to the
sheriff not less than one thousand dollars nor more than fifteen hun-
dred dollars, and to the clerk not more than twelve hundred dollars;
in the county of Stafford, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not less
than four hundred dollars nor more than eight hundred dollars; in the
county of Southampton, to the sheriff and clerk severally, not less than

Section 2726-y. Provided that the annual allowances to be made by

The compensation and allowances of the sheriff and the clerk of eich
county which adopts any form of county organization and governr ent
provided for in chapter one hundred and nine-a of the Code of Virgi iia,
may be fixed and determined as provided in the form of county or-
ganization and government adopted, without regard to the provisi ns
and limitations contained in sections twenty-seven hundred and twet ty-
six-m to twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-y, both inclusive, of the
Code of Virginia.
2. Be it further enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That
sections twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six, twenty-seven huné red
and twenty-six-a, twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-b, twenty-seven
hundred and twenty-six-c, twenty-seven hundred and twenty-si::-d,
twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-e, twenty-seven hundred ind
twenty-six-f, twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-g, twenty-seven
hundred and twenty-six-h, twenty-seven hundred and _ twenty-six-i,
twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-j, twenty-seven hundred ind
twenty-six-k and twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-l] of the Code
of Virginia be, and the same are hereby, repealed.
