Chap. 136.—An ACT to define the boundary line of the Wards in the
city of Petersburg, and to provide for a new registration.
In force February 20, 1884.
l. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the city of Petersburg shall be divided into Bix wards, to be
desiznated and known as the first, second, third, fourth, titth,
and sixth wards respectively, and ‘bounded as follows, to-wit:
The first ward shall embrace all that part of the city lying
east of Licutenant or Great run, and north of the middle line
of Lombard street to Sycamore street; thence east of the
middle line of Sycamore street to Old street; thence south of
the middle line of Old street to Rock street; thence east of
the middle line of Rock street to the eastern part of Flea
island. This ward shall embraco all that part of the city
known as Blanford, and all that part known as Pocahontas.
The second ward shall embrace all that part of the city
lying west of Lieutenant or Great run, and south of the mid-
dle line of Lombard street to Sycamore street, and east of
the middle line of Sycamore strect to Licutenant or Great run.
The third ward shall embrace all that part of the city lying
west of the middle line of Sycamore strect and of Rock street,
and north of Lieutenant or Great run, south of Appomattox
river, and east of a line from Lieutenant or Great run, down
the middle line of High Pearl street, east side thereof, down
the middle line of Harding street to Malifax street; thence
down the middle line of Halitax street to Market street;
thence down the middle line of Market street to Appomattox
river, including Flea island in said river.
The fourth ward shall embrace all that part of the city
lying west of the middle line of Market street, from the A ppo-
mattox river to Brown street; thence north of the middle
line of Brown street to Perry street; thence west of the
middle line of Perry street to Gill street; thence north of
the middle line of Gill street to Jones street; thence east of
the middle line of Jones street, Mill road. and Pig alley, to
Old street; thence north of the middle line of Old street to
Fleet street; thence cast of the middle line of Fleet street to
the north side of Appomattox river at Campbell’s bridge.
The fifth ward shall embrace all that part of the city lying
west of the middle line of Fleet street from the Appomattox
river to Old street; thence south of the middle line of Old
street to Pig alley; thence west of the middle line of Pig
alley and of Mill road to Jones street; thence west of the
middle line of Jones street to Wilcox street; thenee north
of the middle line of Wileox street to West End = park ;
thence east of the eastern boundary of West End park to
Farmer strect; thence north of the middle line of Farmer
strect to the corporation line; thence east of the corporation
line to the Appomattox river.
The sixth ward shall embrace all that part of the city
lying south of Brown street, beginning at the corner of Market
street and Brown street; west of the middle line of Market
atreet to Halifax street; thence west of the middle line of
Halifax street to Harding street ; thence west of the middle
line of Harding street to High Pearl street > thence west of
the middle line of High Pearl street to Licutenant or Great
run; thence west as the run meanders to the southwest cor-
ner of the corporation line; thence north with the corpora-
tion line to Farmer street; thence south of the middle line of
Farmer's street to the northeast corner of West End park ;
thence west of the eastern boundary of West End park to
Wilcox street; thence south of the middle line of Wilcox
street to Jones street ; thenee west of the middle line of Jones
street to Gill street; thence south of the middle line of Gill
street to Perry street ; thence cast of the middle line of Perry
street to Brown street; thence south of the middle line of
Brown strect to the beginning. This ward shall include all
that part of the city known as Williamsburg.
2. Each of the registrars appointed for the several wards
of the city of Petersburg, as above defined. shall, on the sixth
cay of May, cighteen hundred and eighty-four, proceed to
resister the names of all the qualified voters of his ward who
reside therein, and apply theretor, and according to law are
entitled to registration, giving notice of the time and place
thereof for at least ten days before commencing such regis-
tration, by publication of said notice in two newspapers pub-
lished in said city of Petersburg, and by posting printed
notices thereof at ten public places within his wai The
suid registrars shall complete the said registration gn the
thirteenth day of May, eightcen hundred and eighty- four,
and within five days after ‘completing the said registration,
shall cause to be posted at three or more public places in their
respective wards, written or printed lists of all persons ad-
mitted by them to registration. Each of the said registrars
shall have two clerks on each day of the said registration.
3. The registration made under this act shall take the
place of all registrations heretofore made in said city.
4. The secretary of the commonwealth shall furnish the
clerk of the hustings court of the city of Petersburg with as
many registration-books as may be necessary to carry out
the provisions of this act.
5. All acts and parts of acts in conflict with this act are
hereby repealed.
6. This act shall be in force from its passage.
