An Act to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered
15.1-9.1:1, so as to authorize the appointment by the governing body of
a county attorney; to provide for his compensation and duties; to whom
he shall be accountable. |

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia be amended by adding a section numbered
15.1-9.1:1, as follows: :
§ 15.1-9.1:1. Except as provided in §§ 15.1-9.1 and 15.1-9.2, the
governing body of any county may create the office of county attorney.
Such county attorney shall be appointed by the governing body to serve
at the pleasure of the governing body. He shall serve at a salary to be
fixed by the governing body. In the event of the appointment of such
county attorney, the attorney for the Commonwealth of any such county
shall be relieved of the duty of advising the governing body, of drafting
or preparing county ordinances and of defending or bringing civil actions
in which the county or any of its officials shall be a party, and all such
duties shall be performed by the county attorney. He shall be accountable
to the governing body in the performance of his duties.
