An Act to amend and reenact § 14.1-46, as amended, of the Code of
Virginia, relating to compensation for members of boards of super-
visors.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 14.1-46, as amended, of the Code of Virginia be amended and
reenacted as follows:
§ 14.1-46. Salaries to be fixed by board; limits.—The annual compen-
sation to be allowed each member of the board of supervisors of each
county shall be determined by the board but such compensation shall be not
less than two hundred and fifty dollars nor more than eighteen hundred dol-
lars in any county having a population of less than fifty thousand nor more
than three thousand dollars in any county having a population of fifty thou-
sand or more; provided, however, that in any county having a population
of more than seventeen thousand two hundred but less than seventeen
thousand three hundred, the compensation shall be not more than three
thousand six hundred dollars and actual expenses in performance of their
duties not more than one hundred fifty dollars; provided, however, that
in any county having a population of more than thirteen thousand five
hundred but less than fourteen thousand and in any county having a
population of more than sixteen thousand eight hundred but less than
sixteen thousand nine hundred such compensation shall not be more than
two thousand five hundred dollars; provided, however, that in any county
having a population of more than fifteen thousand one hundred but less
than fifteen thousand two hundred the compensation shall not be less than
twelve hundred dollars nor more than fifteen hundred dollars; provided,
however, that in any county having a population of more than forty thou-
sand four hundred but less than forty-two thousand such compensation
shall be not more than three thousand dollars; provided, however, that
in any county having a population of more than fifty thousand but less
than fifty-one thousand such compensation shall be not more than * five
thousand * five hundred dollars, but, in any such county there may in
addition to such compensation be provided an allowance for expenses of
each member incurred in the performance of his duties and not to exceed
one thousand one hundred dollars annually; provided, however, that 1n
any county operating under the county manager form of government
such compensation shall be not more than five thousand dollars;
provided that in any county having a population of more than two hun-
dred fifty thousand such compensation shall not be more than seven
thousand five hundred dollars, but, in any such county, in computing such
compensation, there shall be included therein, in addition to the amount
payable under this section, allowances for secretarial services and all other
supplements of whatsoever nature; provided, further, any board of super-
visors may fix a higher salary for the chairman than for the other members
of the board without respect to the limits herein set forth.
