CHAPTER 592
An Act to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered
82-57.1, relating to the immunization of children against certain
diseases and the manner in which such immunization is to be accom-
plished.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia be amended by adding a section numbered
32-57.1 as follows:
te § 32-57.1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the con-

(a) The State Board of Health may cause each child within this
State be vaccinated as soon after birth as medically indicated, by the
appropriate vaccines and immunizing procedures to prevent measles,
poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, smallpox, and mumps.
(b) The State Board of Health shall promulgate rules, regulations
and schedules for immunization of children against such preventable com-
municable diseases.
(c) The provisions of this section shall not apply if:
. The parent or guardian of the child objects thereto on the
grounds that the administration of immunizing agents conflicts with his
religious tenets or practices, unless an emergency or epidemic of disease
has been declared by the State Board of Health, or
2. The parent or guardian presents a statement from a physician
which states that the physical condition of the child is such that the
administration of one or more of the required immunizing agents would
be detrimental to the health of the child.
