An Act to amend and reenact § 15.1-827 of the Code of Virginia, relating
to the presiding officer of a town and the salary of such officer.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 15.1-827 of the Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted
as follows:
§ 15.1-827. The mayor shall preside over the council; and the
council may direct the payment to the mayor of a salary not exceeding
nine hundred dollars per annum, payable as the council may direct; pro-
vided, however, that in any town having a population of more than one
thousand one hundred thirty and less than one thousand one hundred
fifty, such town being contained in a county having a population of more
than forty-one thousand but less than forty-four thousand, the council may
direct the payment to the mayor of a salary not exceeding twenty-four
hundred dollars per annum. Anything in the charter of any town in this
Commonwealth in conflict with this provision is hereby repealed. In the
event of the absence of the mayor, the council may appoint a president pro
tempore. The mayor shall not receive any compensation for his services in
trying violations of town ordinances or for other services rendered the
town except the salary fixed by the council and all fees for such services
rendered by him shall be paid into the treasury of the town.
