Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
te That § 24-57 of the Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted as
ollows:
§ 24-57. Appointment of general registrar in cities over fifteen
thousand.—The electoral board of each city having a population of fifteen
thousand or more, according to the last preceding United States census,
may * appoint a general registrar for such city, who shall be a discreet
citizen and resident of the city for which he is appointed, and such regis-

and he shall serve until his successor is duly qualified, except as pro-
vided in § 24-63. The appointment of such general registrar shall be
in addition to the office of registrar in each election district in such city
now provided for by law, except that in cities of more than fifteen thousand
and less than sixty thousand inhabitants according to the last preceding
United States census the appointment of such general registrar shall
automatically abolish the office of registrar in each election district in
such city now provided for by law, and except that in cities of more than
one hundred and twenty-nine thousand inhabitants, according to the last
preceding United States census, the appointment of such general registrar
shall automatically abolish the office of registrar in each election district
in such city, now provided for by law. Each of such registrars mentioned
in the preceding sentence, upon the appointment of a general registrar,
provided for in this section, or the abolition of his office, shall deliver to
the registrar, all books, papers and documents pertaining to their respec-
tive offices.
