CHAPTER 157
An Act to authorize the governing bodies of counties, cities and towns to
establish auxiliary police forces, to prescribe the service and jurisdic-
tion of such policemen; and to provide authority for the governing
bodies of municipal corporations to enter into compacts for the mutual
use of regular and auxiliary police.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. §1. In cities, counties and towns in the State, the governing bodies
thereof, for the further preservation of the public peace, safety and good
order of the community shall have the power to establish, equip and main-
tain auxiliary police forces, the members of which when called into service
as hereinafter provided shall have all the powers and authority and all
the immunities of constables at common law.
§ 2. The governing body of the county, city or town shall have
authority to make such appropriation or appropriations as may be neces-
sary to arm, equip, uniform and maintain such auxiliary police force.
§ 3. The governing body of the county, city or town may appoint
or provide for the appointment, as auxiliary policemen as many persons of
good character as it shall deem necessary, not to exceed the number fixed
by ordinance adopted by the governing body, and their appointment shall
be revocable at any time by the said governing body. The governing body
shall have the authority to prescribe the uniform, organization, and such
rules and regulations as it shall deem necessary for the operation of the
said auxiliary police force.
§ 4. The governing body of the county, city or town may call into
service or provide for calling into service such auxiliary policemen as may
be deemed necessary (1) in time of public emergency, (2) at such times as
there are insufficient numbers of regular policemen to preserve the peace,
safety and good order of the community, or (3) at any time for the pur-
pose of training such auxiliary policemen. At all times when performing
such service, the members of the auxiliary police force shall wear the
uniform prescribed by the governing body.
§ 5. The members of any such auxiliary police force shall not be
required to act beyond the limits of the jurisdiction of any such political
subdivision except when called upon to protect any public property belong-
ing to such political subdivision which may be located beyond its bound-
aries. or as provided in § 6.
§ 6. The governing bodies of counties, cities and towns or any combi-
nation thereof whose boundaries are contiguous may by proper resolutions
of such governing bodies enter in and become a party to contracts or
mutual aid agreements for the mutual protection of all partics to such
contracts or agreements by the use of their joint police forces, both regular
and auxiliary, their equipment and materials all for their mutual protec-
tion, defense and the maintenance of peace and good order. Any police
Officer, rerular or auxiliary while performing his duty under any such
contract shall have the same authority in any county, city, or town as he
has within the county, city, or town where he was appointed.
