An Act to amend and reenact §§ 3.1-867, 8.1-868 and 8.1-871 of the Code
of Virginia, and to repeal §§ $.1-846 through $.1-866, 8.1-869 and
8.1-870 of the Code of Virginia, the amended and repealed sections
relating respectively to the definition of certain hams; where proc-
essing thereof to be done; advertising and labeling of such hams,
and prohibiting such advertising and labeling of other hams; penalties
for violating; sanitary conditions in slaughter houses, seizure of meat
and products thereof; penalties; rules for sanitation; how slaughter
houses shall be maintained as to wholesomeness; licenses of slaughter
houses; powers of Commissioner of Agriculture; certain limitations
and exemptions; revocation of licensing; rules for enforcement; trans-
portation of dead animals; representation for purpose of sale certain
hogs; identification of hog carcasses.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That §§ 3.1-867, 3.1-868, and 3.1-871 of the Code of Virginia be
amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 3.1-867. Smithfield hams * defined *.—Genuine Smithfield hams
* are hereby defined to be hams * processed, treated, smoked, aged, cured
by the long-cure, dry salt method of cure and aged for a minimum period
of six months; such six month period to commence when the green pork
cut is first introduced to dry salt, all such salting, processing, treating,
smoking, curing and aging to be done within the corporate limits of the
town of Smithfield, * Virginia.
§ 3.1-868. Only genuine Smithfield hams to be labeled and/or
advertised as such.—No person, firm or corporation shall knowingly, label,
stamp, pack, advertise, sell, or offer for sale * any ham, * either wrapped
or unwrapped, in a container or loose, as a genuine Smithfield ham * unless
such ham be a genuine Smithfield ham * as defined in § 3.1-867.
§ 3.1-871. Penalty for violation.—Any person, firm, corporation or
association violating any of the provisions of this article * shall be guilty
of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a
fine of not less than twenty-five nor more than three hundred dollars.
2. §§ 3.1-846 through 3.1-866, 3.1-869 and 3.1-870 of the Code of
Virginia are repealed.
