CHAPTER 72
An Act to amend and reenact § 5 of Chapter 44 of the Acts of Assembly
of 1938, approved March 1, 1988, which provided a charter for the
town of Clarksville, relating to town elections.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 5 of Chapter 44, Acts of Assembly, 1988, approved March 1
1938, be amended and reenacted as follows: .
§ 5. The present officers of the town shall continue in office unti
their successors are elected the second Tuesday in June, nineteen hundrec
and * sizty-siz, on which date the next town election will be held, unless
sooner removed as is provided by law. On the second Tuesday in June
nineteen hundred and * sixty-six, three councilmen shall be elected for ¢
term of four years and three councilmen for a term of two years. The
three candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall at this electior
be elected for terms of four years each and the three candidates receiving
the next highest number of votes shall be elected for terms of two years. *
Biennially thereafter elections shall be held for the office of mayor and *
of three councilmen as herein provided, the councilmen to be elected for
terms of four years and the mayor to be elected for a term of two years
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
