An Act to amend and reenact § 24-87, as amended, of the Code of Vir-
ginia, relating to compensation of members of local electoral boards.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 24-37, as amended, of the Code of Virginia, be amended and
reenacted, as follows:
§ 24-37. The secretary of the electoral board shall receive from the
county, city or town for each day of actual service the sum of twenty
dollars, and each other member of the electoral board shall receive from
the county, city or town for each day of actual service the sum of * fifteen
dollars; provided, that the governing body of any county, city or town may
supplement the compensation herein prescribed for such members, and
the secretary of the electoral board. Each member of the electoral board
shall receive from the county, city or town, respectively, the same mileage
as is now paid to jurors; provided that no member of such board shall
receive from the county, city or town, respectively, more than one
thousand dollars for the secretary and two hundred fifty dollars for other
members in any one year exclusive of mileage; and provided further that
in any county adjoining any county having a density of population of one
thousand or more a square mile, and in any county having a population of
not less than seventeen thousand two hundred nor more than seventeen
thousand three hundred fifty, each member of the board * other than the
secretary may receive as much as but not in excess of five hundred dollars
in any one year, exclusive of mileage; provided that in any county having
a population in excess of * four thousand inhabitants per square mile, * each
member of the board shall receive the sum of five hundred dollars per year;
and provided that in any county adjoining a city lying wholly in the State
and having a population of more than one hundred ninety thousand, each
member of the board * other than the secretary may receive as much as,
but not in excess of, three hundred dollars in any one year, exclusive of
mileage; and provided further that in any county having a population of
more than thirty-seven thousand but less than thirty-eight thousand and
in any city having a population of more than twenty-two thousand one
hundred but less than twenty-three thousand and in a city having a popu-
lation of more than fifteen thousand five hundred but less than sixteen
thousand, the secretary of the electoral board may receive as much as
herein prescribed and other members may receive as much as but not in
excess of six hundred dollars in any one year, exclusive of mileage; * and
provided, further, that in any county having a population in excess of two
hundred thousand, each member of the board shall receive for each day of
actual services the sum of twenty-five dollars, and may receive as much
as, but not in excess of, one thousand dollars in any one year exclusive of
mileage; and provided, further, that in any county having a population of
more than one hundred thousand but less than one hundred fifty thousand,
the members of the electoral board shall receive for each day of actual
service the sum of twenty-five dollars, and provided, further, that in the
event one or more special elections be held in any county, city or town in
any year, the members of the electoral board shall be paid additional
amounts at the same per diem, and mileage.
