An Act to amend and reenact § 16.1-1783 of the Code of Virginia, relating
to appointments of guardian ad litem in certain juvenile cases; so as
to provide for compensation for certain guardians.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 16.1-173 of the Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted
as follows:
§ 16.1-173. When no person required to be notified under § 16.1-172
is present in court at the time of the hearing, the court shall, before pro-
ceeding with the hearing, appoint a probation officer or a discreet and
competent attorney at law as guardian ad litem to represent the interests
the child or minor and such guardian ad litem shall be present at the
earing.
_ _ In the event that an attorney at law is so appointed, and the court or
judge is satisfied that the guardian ad litem has rendered substantial
service to the child or minor, the court or judge may approve the payment
of a sum not to exceed one hundred dollars to the attorney so appointed.
The sum so approved, when allowed by a court of record and certified to
the comptroller, shall be paid out of the appropriation for criminal charges.
