An Act to amend and reenact § 14.1-78 of the Code of Virginia, relatir
to salary schedules of sheriffs and sergeants; factors to be considere
in fixing such salaries. 8 27

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. ' ta § 14.1-73 of the Code of Virginia, be amended and reenacte
as follows:
§ 14.1-73.—The annual salaries of the sheriffs of the several counti
and cities and of the sergeants of the several cities of the Commonwealt
shall be within the limits hereinafter prescribed, that is to say:
In counties having a population of not more than five thousand i
habitants, such salaries shal] not be less than three thousand six hundre
dollars nor more than five thousand two hundred dollars.
In counties having a population of more than five thousand but n
more than ten thousand inhabitants, such salaries shall] not be less tha
four thousand four hundred dollars nor more than six thousand two hw
dred dollars.
In counties having a population of more than ten thousand but n
more than fifteen thousand inhabitants, such salaries shall not be less the
four thousand nine hundred dollars nor more than seven thousand dollar

In cities having a population of more than ten thousand but not
more than twenty thousand inhabitants, such salaries shall not be less
than six thousand five hundred dollars nor more than nine thousand four
hundred dollars.
In cities having a population of more than twenty thousand but not
more than forty thousand inhabitants, such salaries shall not be less than
seven thousand six hundred dollars nor more than ten thousand five hun-
dred dollars.
In cities having a population of more than forty thousand but not
more than seventy thousand inhabitants, such salaries shall not be less
ae eight thousand four hundred dollars nor more than twelve thousand
ollars.
In cities having a population of more than seventy thousand but not
more than one hundred thousand inhabitants, such salaries shall not be
less than nine thousand nine hundred dollars nor more than thirteen
thousand five hundred dollars.
In cities having a population of more than one hundred thousand
but not more than two hundred fifty thousand inhabitants, such salaries
shall not be less than ten thousand five hundred dollars nor more than
fifteen thousand dollars.
In cities having a population of more than two hundred fifty thousand
inhabitants, such salaries shall not be less than twelve thousand three
hundred dollars nor more than seventeen thousand five hundred dollars.
In fixing the salary of each sheriff and sergeant, and of each of their
full-time deputies, the Compensation Board shall take into consideration
the length of service of such sheriff, sergeant, or deputy, the population
and area of the county or city for which he is elected or appointed,
whether a sheriff also served a second class city wholly within his county,
the number of persons committed to the jail thereof, the aggregate number
of days spent by prisoners in the jail thereof, the compensation previously
received by the sheriff or sergeant and each of their full-time deputies,
the amount of fees collected by such officers and such other factors as the
Compensation Board deems proper.
