An Act to amend and reenact §§ 16.1-221, 17-226, 17-228, 17-229, 17-230
and 17-231 of the Code of Virginia, relating to the Judicial Confer-
ence and Council of Virginia. 3 43

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That §§ 16.1-221, 17-226, 17-228, 17-229, 17-230 and 17-231 of the
Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 16.1-221. The active members and honorary members * shall receive
their actual expenses while in attendance at the meetings of the Confer-
ence, and of the executive committee.
§ 17-226. Each member of the Council shall serve without compensa-
tion, * and each member of the Council summoned and attending its
meetings shall be allowed his actual expenses of travel and also his neces-
sary expenses for subsistence while attending the Council. * As provided
by § 17-111.2 the executive secretary of the Supreme Court of Appeals
shall be the Secretary of the Judicial Council. .
All necessary printing shall be done by the Department of * Pur-
chases and Supply as may be ordered by the Chief Justice of the Supreme
Court of Appeals or the judge presiding at the Council. —
§ 17-228. There is hereby established the J udicial Conference of
Virginia, which shall have as its active members the Chief Justice and
Justices of the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia, all other judges of
the courts of record of the Commonwealth and all retired Justices and
judges of such courts. * The honorary membership shall consist of the
Attorney General of Virginia, the chairmen of the Courts of Justice Com-
mittees of the Senate and House of Delegates, the president and secretary
of the Virginia State Bar and the president and secretary of the Virginia
State Bar Association, * the deans of the law departments of the College
of William and Mary, University of Richmond, University of Virginia,
and Washington and Lee University, and the four attorneys appointed
by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals as members of
the Judicial Council. The honorary members shall not have voting privi-
ges.
§ 17-229. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals shall
be the president of the Judicial Conference. The Conference shall elect
from the judges, active and retired, of trial courts of record * five judges
who shall act as an executive committee. * The Chief Justice, or a Justice
of the Supreme Court of Appeals designated by him, shall be * chairman
of the executive committee.
§ 17-230. The Conference shall meet at least once in each calendar
year at the call of the president and at such other times as may be desig-
nated by him or by the executive committee for the purpose of discussing
and considering means and methods of improving the administration of
justice in this State. If any active member shall for any cause be unable
to attend, he shall promptly notify the president *. Unless excused from
attendance, it shall be the duty of each active member to attend and remain
throughout the proceedings of the Conference.
§ 17-231. The active members and honorary members * shall receive
their actual expenses while in attendance at the meetings of the Con-
ference, and of the executive committee.
