An Act to create the Magna Carta Commission of 1965, to define its duties
and to appropriate funds. 3 346

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. There is hereby created a commission to be known as the Magna Carta
Commission of 1965.
. The Commission shall consist of fifteen members to be appointed as
hereafter set forth. Three members shall be members of the Senate, ap-
pointed by the President of the Senate; four members shall be members of
the House of Delegates, appointed by the Speaker of the House; and eight
members shall be appointed by the Governor, one of whom shall be ap-
pointed as Chairman. The at-large members shall be broadly representa-
ho the public, and particularly concerned with history, government and
e law.
The members of the Commission shall receive no salaries but shall be
reimbursed for actual expenses incurred in attendance upon meetings or
while otherwise engaged in the discharge of their duties.
8. The Commission is authorized and directed to plan and present a suit-
able program commemorating the 750th anniversary of the signing of the
Magna Carta on June 15, 1215. The program may take the form of appro-
priate lectures, seminars, publications, memorial plaques or sculpture, or
any combination of the foregoing. Such programs shall be presented at
suitable locations to be determined by the Commission.
The Commission is authorized to solicit and receive gifts and contri-
butions to be used toward the furtherance of the program; to cooperate
with public and private groups and organizations in promoting, advertis-
ing, and stimulating interest in the program; and to perform all other acts
necessary or incidental to performing the duties hereby imposed.
4. Any funds received by the Commission from any source shall be de-
posited in the State Treasury to be disbursed on behalf of the Commission
on vouchers signed by the Chairman.
5. There is hereby appropriated the sum of twenty thousand dollars for
the purpose of carrying out the provisions of this act.
6. All officers, departments, commissions, boards, agencies and institu-
tions of the State are directed to cooperate with, and assist, the Commis-
sion herein created in carrying out the purposes of this act. The Virginia
Commission on Constitutional Government shall provide secretarial and
clerical services for the Commission herein created.
. The Commission shall cease to exist thirty days after the completion
of its commemorative program, and not later than August 1, 1965.
