An Act to amend and reenact § 22-88.1 of the Code of Virginia, relating
to the manner of choosing school board members in certain counties,
and to repeal § 22-83 of the Code of Virginia, relating to school boards
in certain counties having no magisterial districts. rH 224)

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
La That § 22-83.1 of the Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted as
ollows:
§ 22-83.1. Notwithstanding the provisions of § 22-80 or any other
provision of law * to the contrary, in any county having a county manager
form of government and having a population of more than four thousand
per square mile, the terms of members of the county school board in office
when this act becomes effective shall be extended six months.
After May one, nineteen hundred sixty-six but before June one, nine-
teen hundred sixty-six, the governing body of any such county shall
appoint one member to the county schoo! board for a term of three years,
and one member for a term of four years; such terms to begin on July
one, nineteen hundred sixty-six. After May one, nineteen hundred sixty-
eight but before June one, ninetecn hundred sixty-eight, the governing
body of any such county shall appoint two members for terms of four years
and one member for a term of three years, such terms to begin on July one,
nineteen hundred sixty-eight. Thereafter, between May one and June one
in the year in which a member is to be appointed, successors to members
whose terms expire shall be chosen by the governing body of any such
county for terms of four years; provided that such county governing body
shall have the power to fill vacancies occurring other than by expiration
of term for the unexpired term.
2. § 22-83 of the Code of Virginia is repealed.
