An Act to amend and reenact § 45, as amended, of Chapter 288 of the
Acts of Assembly of 1924, approved March 20, 1924, which provided a
charter for the Town of Salem, the section relating to the town coun-
cu, salaries and appointive offices. CH 186}

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 45, as amended, of Chapter 288 of the Acts of Assembly of
1924, approved March 20, 1924, be amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 45. Salaries and compensation.—From and after the passage of
this act, the salaries of the councilmen and the chairman, who is ex officio
mayor, shall be such as may be fixed by the council; provided, however,
that the salary of no councilman shall exceed * one hundred dollars per
month and that the salary of the chairman of the council, who is ex officio
mayor, shall not exceed the sum of * fifty dollars per month, in addition
to his salary as councilman.
* The salaries and compensation of the police justice and substitute
police justice, and all other officers and employees of the town, shall be
such as may, from time to time, be fixed and prescribed by the council.
All charges, costs and fees taxable and collectable by the police justice or
substitute police justice in the trial of all cases, civil and criminal, when
taxed and collected shall be paid into the Treasury of the town; and no
trial officer shall have any personal financial interest therein.
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
