CHAPTER 552
An Act authorizing and empowering the Governor to execute in the name
of the Commonwealth of Virginia a deed conveying to the United
States of America, certain lands containing 50 acres, more or less,
situate in the James River, in the city of Newport News, Virginia.

Whereas, it is the desire and intention of the federal government to
construct and develop a marginal area created by dredged material in
the James River, provided the lands are acquired; and
Whereas, the title to a part of the Jands necessary in connection with
the construction and development of such area is in the Commonwealth
of Virginia; and
Whereas, such development will contribute much to the Hampton
Roads area and the national defense; now, therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. The Governor of Virginia is hereby authorized and empowered to
execute in the name of the Commonwealth of Virginia, a deed in form ap-
proved by the Attorney General conveying such rights, title and interest
as the Commonwealth of Virginia may have in that certain piece, parcel
or tract of land containing fifty acres, more or less, situate in the James
River, city of Newport News, Virginia, all of which is shown on map on
file in the office of the U. S. Army Engineer District, Norfolk, Virginia,
titled “North Atlantic Division, Norfolk District, Real Estate, Goose Is-
land, Fort Eustis Military Reservation, dated 18 Sept. ’44’’, and being more
particularly bounded and described as follows:
All that certain tract or parcel of land lying and situate in the city of
Newport News, Virginia, being the northern portion of Goose Island lo-
cated in the James River on the southerly side of the Skiffes Creek Chan-
nel and more particularly described as follows: Beginning at a point on
the mean low water line on the east edge of Goose Island, said point being
south 21°30’ west 855 feet, more or less, from a monument marked “USGS
Primary Traverse Station No. 2” located on the Fort Eustis Military Res-
ervation between Skiffes Creek and Milstead Creek; thence, with the lands
now or formerly of William Edward Hogg south 74°46’ west 2,064 feet and
south 84°20’ west 1,020 feet to a point on the mean low water line on the
west edge of Goose Island; thence, generally northerly, easterly and south-
erly following the meanderings of the mean low water line, approximately
5,000 feet to the point of beginning, containing 50.00 acres, more or less.
Being a part of the land created by channel dredging and owned by
the | ommmorwealth of Virginia pursuant to Code of Virginia, Title 41,
ection 8.
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
