An Act to amend and reenact § 58-108 of the Code of Virginia to eliminate
therefrom the provision for the payment of allowances for work on the
public roads by certain persons convicted of misdemeanors. P

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
La That § 58-103 of the Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted as
ollows:
§ 53-103. Whenever a male person over eighteen years of age is
convicted of any misdemeanor for which a jail sentence might be imposed,
either for a fixed period of time, or a sentence to serve in default of pay-
ment of fine or in default of surety, the judge or trial justice trying the
case may, in his discretion, in lieu of committing him to jail, sentence
him to a like period on the public roads, and cause him to be delivered
into the custody of the Director, to be kept by him as a member of the
State convict road force, in accordance with law, and subject to work
on the public roads.
