An Act to amend and reenact § 58-142 of the Code of Virginia, relating
to the commitment of prisoners to jatls of other counties or cities for
safekeeping.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
7 That § 53-142 of the Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted as
ollows:
§ 53-142. In any case should it become necessary or expedient for the
safekeeping of any prisoner, or for other good cause, a court or the judge
thereof in vacation may commit such prisoner to a jail other than that
located in his county or city; and the sheriff or sergeant in making his
account for the board of such prisoner or prisoners shall include such
prisoner or prisoners in such account, as if such prisoner or prisoners had
actually been committed from his county or city, and the judge of the
circuit, corporation or hustings court of the county or city in which such
jail is located, shall certify such account to the Comptroller for payment
out of the treasury, as provided in § *19.1-817; provided, however, that
the authorities of the county or city from which the prisoner is sent shall
be responsible for any damage done by him to the jail of the county or
city in which such prisoner may be confined.
2. This act shall become effective on July 1, 1960.
