An Act to authorize the State Highway Commissioner to acquire by pur-
chase lands of the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad, and to dis-
pose of any portions thereof not necesary for highway purposes.
[S 197]
Approved March 17, 1960
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the State Highway Commissioner is hereby authorized to ac-
quire by purchase, in whole or in part, the lands or any interest therein,
comprising the railroad right of way of the Washington and Old Dominion
Railroad, located in the county of Arlington and known as the Rosslyn
Branch line; provided, however, that such acquisition shall not be effected
until such railroad company shall have complied with all statutory require-
ments made and provided for obtaining approval of the abandonment of
such branch line. In the event that, for any reason, the Washington and
Old Dominion Railroad is abandoned, the State Highway Commissioner is
authorized to purchase all or any part of the right of way of said railroad
or any interest therein; provided, further, that the permission herein
given shall not be deemed as legislative consent to such abandonment.
The Highway Commissioner is authorized to dispose of any portions
of the lands mentioned hereinabove which are not deemed necessary for
highway purposes, either by sale or in exchange for other lands which may
better serve highway purposes.
