CHAPTER 258
An Act to authorize the Board of Visitors of the College of William and
Mary in Virginia to sell and convey certain property in the city of
Willtamsburg to Colonial Williamsburg, Incorporated.
Whereas, the College of William and Mary in Virginia is the owner of
a certain parcel of land in the city of Williamsburg, which parcel in-
cludes the eighteenth century location of the “Travis House”; and
Whereas, the Board of Visitors of the said College desires to make an
exception to its general policy of retaining College land in order that im-
portant restoration and reconstruction work may be carried on in this
historic area; and
Whereas, Colonial Williamsburg, Incorporated, is vitally interested
in acquiring the said parcel of land for the purpose of reconstruction and
restoration of the said historic area; and
Whereas, the Board of Visitors of the said College and the Trustees
of Colonial Williamsburg, Incorporated, have had the value of the said
parcel of land appraised by a board of impartial] and independent apprais-
ers and have agreed upon a fair purchase price therefor; now, therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. § 1. The Board of Visitors of the College of William and Mary in
Virginia is hereby authorized to sell and convey for the sum of one hun-
dred sixteen thousand four hundred dollars ($116,400.00) to Colonial
Williamsburg, Incorporated, all that certain lot, piece or parcel of land
comprising 1.96 acres, lying and being in the city of Williamsburg, Vir-
ginia, and more particularly described as follows:
Beginning at an iron rod marking the intersection of the northern
line of Francis Street with the eastern line of South Henry Street, thence
along the eastern line of said Henry Street N 4° 37’ W 193.50’ to an iron
rod, thence N 85° 23’ E 312.01’ to a rod, thence N 4° 37’ W 4.00’ to a rod,
thence N 85° 23’ E 43.62’ to a pipe, thence S 4° 37’ E 61.23’ to a pipe,
thence N 85° 23’ E 119.84’ to a rod in the western line of Nassau Street,
thence along the western line of Nassau Street S 4° 37’ E 136.27’ to a rod
marking the intersection of the northern line of Francis Street with the
western line of Nassau Street, thence along the northern line of Francis
Street S 85° 23’ W 475.47’ to the point of beginning and containing 1.96
acres of land, which real estate was conveyed to the College of William and
Mary in Virginia by deed from Colgate W. Darden, Jr., Governor of
Virginia, etc., et al, dated September 5, 1945, and recorded on September
11, 1945, in the Clerk’s Office of the Circuit Court of the City of Williams-
burg and James City County in Deed Book 20, page 298.
§ 2. Such conveyance shall be by deed in form approved by the
Attorney General of Virginia.
§ 3. All moneys received from the sale of said property shall be
paid into the State treasury to the credit of the College of William and
Mary in Virginia, to be expended by the Rector and Visitors for the con-
struction in whole or in part of a new library for the College in Williams-
burg, or for debt reduction, subject to the approval of the Governor.
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
