An Act to amend and reenact § 16.1-16 of the Code of Virginia, relating
to bond required of clerks, officers and employees of courts not of
record.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
hae That § 16.1-16 of the Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted as
ollows:
§ 16.1-16. Every clerk, deputy clerk or other officer or employee of
a court not of record who handles or is accountable for funds belonging to
or in the custody of the court shall, before entering upon the duties of his
office, enter into bond before the clerk of a circuit or corporation court to
which appeals from his court lie, which bond shall be in a penalty deemed
adequate and fixed by the judge of the court of record in which he qualifies,
but in no event less than two thousand dollars. Such bond shall be with
corporate surety approved by the clerk of the court of record, shall be
conditioned for the faithful performance of the duties of the principal, and
shall be made payable and shall be filed as provided in § 16.1-15 for bonds
of judges of courts not of record.
The bond required under this section may be dispensed with if such
officers and employees are under bond, in the amount of at least two
thousand dollars, obtained by the city which is served by such court, con-
ditioned upon the faithful performance of their duties and payable as the
interest of the Commonwealth and city may appear.
