An Act to designate June 2, 1958, and the same date on each succeeding
year as First Lady’s Day in Virginia. CH 12]

Whereas, the First First-Lady of this Nation, Martha Dandridge
Custis Washington, was born at “Chestnut Grove’, New Kent County,
Virginia, on June 2, 1731; and .
Whereas, Martha Washington, as this Nation’s First First-Lady,
occupies a unique and conspicuous position of distinction as a participant
in the founding of the United States of America; and
_ Whereas, Martha Washington and her Virginia born successors as
First Ladies of the Nation, by virtue of the great contribution which ae
have made to our American heritage and the heavy responsibilities whi
they have so graciously borne, are entitled to an annual day of tribute
throughout these United States of America; and
Whereas, the birth date of this Nation’s First First-Lady, June 2,
would be the most appropriate date for such occasion; now, therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. The second day of June, nineteen hundred fifty-eight, and the same
date of each succeeding year is designated as First Lady’s Day in Vir-
a in special tribute to Martha Washington as America’s First First-
dy and to each of her Virginia born successors as First Ladies of this
Nation; and upon this date, in perpetuity, all citizens, groups and appropri-
ate agencies in and of the Commonwealth of Virginia and of the Nation are
urged to reflect upon and give appropriate recognition to the magnificent
contribution of this Nation’s First Ladies to the heritage of the United
States of America.
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
