CHAPTER 253
AN ACT to amend Chapter 47 of the Acts of Assembly of 1956, Extra Ses-
sion, approved September 29, 1956, which authorized the Virginia
State Bar to make certain rules and regulations concerning legal aid
societies, to provide for enforcement and to prohibit the operation of
certain legal aid societies, by adding a section numbered $-a, to make tt
a misdemeanor and to provide penalties for any person, firm, corpora-
tion, association, or organization of any nature who or which renders
the services of a legal aid society without complying with such rules
and regulations, and to provide for the disbarment of and penalties for
any attorney at law who assists in rendering such services; and to pro-
vide for enjoining violations. [8 268]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That Chapter 47 of the Acts of Assembly of 1956, Extra Session, ap-
proved September 29, 1956, be amended by adding a section numbered

§ 3-a. It shall be a misdemeanor for any person, firm, corporation,
association or organization of any nature to render legal services as a legal
aid society, or for any attorney at law to render legal services at the in-
stance or request of any such person, firm, corporation, association, or
organization of any nature, unless such person, firm, corporation, associa-
tion or organization shall first comply with the rules and regulations
adopted under § 1 hereof. Violations shall be punishable by imprison-
ment in jail not to exceed twelve months or by a fine of not to exceed one
thousand dollars or by both such imprisonment and fine. In addition to
such penalties, an injunction shall lie to prevent any violation of any pro-
vision of this act or rule or regulation adopted heagunder. Any attorney
at law who renders legal services at the instance or request of any person,
firm, corporation, association or organization of any nature which purports
to operate or does operate as a legal aid society without complying with the
provisions of this act or rules and regulations adopted hereunder, shall, in
addition to any other penalties, be subject to disbarment upon conviction.
The penalties provided by this act shall be in addition and supplemental to
any other penalties provided for any offense for which a person may be
prosecuted, convicted or enjoined under this act.
