AN ACT to amend and reenact § 80 of Chapter 548 of the Acts of As-
sembly of 1952, approved April 3, 1952, which provided a new charter
for the town of Smithfield, the section relating to employees of the
town.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 30 of Chapter 548 of the Acts of Assembly of 1952, ap-
proved April 3, 1952, be amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 30. The council shall fix the salaries of the mayor, councilmen,
treasurer, clerk, sergeant, deputy sergeant and employees, as it may
deem appropriate at its first meeting in September and at its first meet-
ing in March, which salary shall be for a period of * siz months and shall
not be increased or decreased during that period of time, provided, that
a salary may be paid one or more councilmen or a salary in excess of
that paid other councilmen may be paid one or more councilmen, if a
majority of the council determine that additional duties and respon-
sibilities assumed by such councilman or councilmen, by reason of com-
mittee assignment or otherwise, warrant such salary, and a majority of
the council authorize such additional compensation, but in no event shall
the annual compensation of any councilman exceed two hundred dollars
nor shall that of the mayor or mayor pro tem. exceed six hundred dollars.
