CHAPTER 26
An Act to authorize the city of Newport News in its discretion to apply
the unexpended proceeds from the sale of bonds for constructing and
equipping an addition to Whittaker Memorial Hospital and to purchase
land upon which to erect said addition; to pay the cost of other public
improvements in the city of Newport News, including the redevelop-
ment of slum areas, if the Whittaker Memorial Hospital improvement
ts abandoned.

Whereas, the city of Newport News did on May first, nineteen hun-
dred fifty-six, under the Constitution and laws of the Commonwealth of
Virginia, including the charter of the city of Newport News and ordinance
adopted by the city of Newport News, issue and sell public improvement
bonds in the total amount of two million one hundred seventy-five thousand
dollars; and
Whereas, one of the purposes of this bond issue was to provide funds
to pay the cost of “constructing and equipping an addition to Whittaker
Meare Hospital and purchasing land upon which to erect said addition” ;
an
Whereas, the excessive cost of constructing and equipping an addition
to Whittaker Memorial Hospital and purchasing land upon which to erect
said addition may be in excess of the original estimates and the city is
unable to provide the additional sum for said construction, and the council
of the city of Newport News may desire to abandon the construction of the
addition to Whittaker Memorial Hospital at this time;
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. § 1. That the city of Newport News be, and it is hereby, authorized,
in its discretion, to apply the sum of three hundred ninety-five thousand
one hundred twenty-four dollars and two cents, being the unexpended
balance, with interest, now in its treasury derived from the sale of bonds
authorized by ordinance adopted by the city of Newport News dated May
first, nineteen hundred fifty-six, for the purpose of providing other neces-
sary public improvements in the city of Newport News, including re-
development of slum areas, if the improvements to the Whittaker Memorial
Hospital are abandoned.
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
