An Act to amend and reenact § 58-71 of the Code of Virginia, relating
to taxes on suits and writ taxes generally. CH 413]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
Can That § 58-71 of the Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted as
ollows:
§ 58-71. When any original suit, whether commenced by writ or
notice, ejectment or attachment, other than a summons to answer a suge
gestion, or other action, except a suit in chancery, is commenced in a court
of record and in every case a removal or appeal of a cause from a trial
justice’s court to a court of record, or upon any appeal from the decision
of the board of supervisors or other governing body of a county, or of
an attachment issued by a justice and returnable to a court of record,
there shall be a tax thereon, if the amount of the debt or demand for
damages shall not exceed one thousand dollars, of one dollar; when the

lebt or demand for damages exceeds one thousand dollars but does not
xceed five thousand dollars, the tax shall be two dollars; when the debt
wr demand for damages exceeds five thousand dollars, but does not exceed
ifty thousand dollars, the tax shall be five dollars; but when the debt or
lemand for damages exceeds fifty thousand dollars but does not exceed
me hundred thousand dollars, the tax shall be fifteen dollars; and when
he debt or demand for damages exceeds one hundred thousand dollars
he tax shall be twenty-five dollars.
