CHAPTER 548
An Act for the relief of certain persons who incurred liabilities in
reliance upon undertakings of the Commonwealth. TS 874]

Whereas, many residents of Virginia entered various schools and in-
stitutions of higher education in reliance upon the assurances of the Com-
monwealth that they would be repaid for certain expenditures pursuant to
the provisions of Chapter 708 of the Acts of Assembly of 1954 and other
provisions of law; and
Whereas, for reasons beyond the control of such persons and of the
Commonwealth, the legal obligation of the Commonwealth thereunder has
been set aside and these persons cannot be reimbursed except as herein-
after provided; now, therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia: .
1. From funds heretofore appropriated by law, there is hereby authorized
to be paid by or under the supervision of the State Board of Education to
persons who have entered schools and institutions of higher education in
reliance upon undertakings of the Commonwealth, pursuant to Chapter
708 of the Acts of Assembly of 1954, and within the limitations heretofore
set by law, such sums for the school year 1955-56 as such persons have ex-
pended in reasonable reliance upon representations of the Commonwealth
that reimbursement would be made therefor. The State Board of Educa-
tion and the State Department of Education may require such proof as they
deem proper prior to any expenditure hereunder.
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
