CHAPTER 52
AN ACT to amend and reenact § 7 of Chapter 419 of the Acts of Assembly
1986, approved March 80, 1986, which provided a new charter for
the town of Altavista, the amended section relating to the composition
and election of the town council. CH 53]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 7 of Chapter 419 of the Acts of Assembly of 1936, approved
March 30, 1936, be amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 7. The mayor and the six (6) councilmen shall be elected at large
by the qualified voters of the town, and shall be elected at the regular time
in June, nineteen hundred and* fifty-six, fixed by law for the holding of
municipal elections.* The three candidates receiving the highest number of
votes shall serve a term of four years each and the three candidates re-
ceiving the next highest number of votes shall serve for terms of two
years each. The mayor shall be elected for a term of four years.
At the regular municipal election to be held in June, nineteen hundred
and fifty-eight and every two years thereafter three councilmen shall be
elected for terms of four years each.

In the regular municipal election to be held in June, nineteen hundred
and sixty and every four years thereafter three councilmen and the
mayor shall be elected for terms of four years each. Terms of office shall
commence on the first day of September next following their election
and shall continue until their successors have been elected and qualified.
The council shall be a continuing body, and no measure pending before
such body shall abate or be discontinued by reason of expiration of the
term of office or removal of the members of said body or any of them.
Vacancies in the council by any officer therein shall be filled within thirty
days after such vacancy occurs for the unexpired term by a majority
vote of the remaining members, except where otherwise inconsistent
with the provisions of this charter.
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
