An Act to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered
18-261.1, so as to prohibit making sound recordings of jury delibera-
tions and to provide penalties for violation. g

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia be amended by adding a section numbered
18-261.1 as follows:
§ 18-261.1. If any person shall install or cause to be installed or use
or cause to be used any microphone or device designed for recording or
transmitting for recording sound in any jury room in this State for the
purpose of recording the deliberations of any jury or for the purpose of
preparing a summary of such deliberations, he shall be confined in the
penitentiary for not less than one nor more than five years or fined not less
than one hundred nor more than one thousand dollars or both in the dis-
cretion of the court or jury trying the case.
