An Act to amend and reenact §§ 17-118.1, as amended, and § 24-164 of the
Code of Virginia, relating to clerks of circuit courts of certain "850 ,
Approved March 14, 1956
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia: ou.
1. That § 17-118.1, as amended, and § 24-164 of the Code of Virginia be
amended and reenacted as follows: .
§ 17-118.1. The clerk of the Hustings Court of the city of Roanoke
shall also be the clerk of the circuit court of the city, and shall perform all
the duties thereof and receive the compensation provided therefor by law..
All acts heretofore performed by the clerk of the Hustings Court as acting
clerk of the circuit court of the city are hereby ratified and given the same =
effect as though performed by a duly elected and qualified clerk of the
circuit court.
The clerk of the Corporation Court of the city of Lynchburg shall also-
be the clerk of the circuit court of that city, and shall perform all the duties
thereof and receive the compensation provided therefor by law.
Nothwithstanding any other provision of law, when a vacancy occurs
in the office of the clerk of the Circuit Court of the city of Richmond the
clerk of the Law and Equity Court of that city shall also be the clerk of
the circuit court, and shall perform all the duties thereof, receive and
retain all official fees and commissions and receive compensation, all as
provided therefor by law; and thereafter there shall be no election held
for such office. He shall qualify as now prescribed by law and give bond
for the faithful performance of his duties in both courts.
The clerk of the Corporation or Hustings Court of the city of Peters-
burg shall also be the clerk of the Circuit Court of the city and shall per-
form all the duties thereof and receive the compensation provided therefor
by law. All acts heretofore performed by the clerk of the Corporation or
Hustings Court as acting clerk of the Circuit Court of the city are hereby
ratified and given the same effect as though performed by a duly elected
and qualified clerk of the Circuit Court.
§ 24-164. In cities having a population of thirty thousand or more,
except the cities of Danville, Roanoke, Lynchburg and Petersburg, there.
shall be elected by the qualified voters a separate clerk of the circuit court
of such city on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, nineteen:
hundred and fifty-one, and every eight years thereafter, whose term of.
office shall begin on the first day of January, succeeding his election and.
continue thereafter for eight years. 4
