CHAPTER 228
An Act to amend and reenact §§ 29-132 and 29-1386 of the Code of Vir-
ginia, relating to certain definitions of wild animals and birds, and
to seasons on nonmigratory game birds.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That §§ 29-132 and 29-136 of the Code of Virginia be amended anc
reenacted as follows: ;
§ 29-132. For the purpose of the hunting and trapping laws of thi:
State, big game shall include bear, deer and elk and small game shal
include all other game birds and game animals.
Wild birds and wild animals shall be classed as follows:
(a) Nonmigratory game birds.—Grouse, ringnecked and other intro
duced species of pheasant; bobwhite, quail and turkey.
b) Migratory game birds.—Doves, ducks, brant, geese, swan, coot
gallinules, sora, other rails, including Virginia, King and Clapper rails
plovers, snipe, woodcock and yellowlegs.
.(c) Game animals.—Bear, deer, elk, fox, rabbit and squirrel.
(d) Furbearing animals.—Beaver, mink, muskrat, opossum, otter
raccoon and skunk.
(e) Predatory or undesirable species of birds and animals.—Black
bird, buzzard, crow, eagle, English sparrow, hawk, jaybird, owl anc
starling, weasel, wildcat and all other wild animals not otherwise classec
as game or furbearing animals.
§ 29-136. Grouse.—Open hunting season, November fifteenth-Janu-
ary thirty-first. Bag limit, four a day, sixteen a season.
Pheasant, ringnecked only.—Open hunting season, November fif-
teenth-January thirty-first. Bag limit, four a day, twenty a season. Pro-
vided that the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries may issue o
permit to raise or purchase pheasants which shall entitle the permittee
to release pheasants raised or purchased by him on land owned or leasea
by him and such pheasants may be hunted under rules and regulations
promulgated by the Commission without regard to the season and bag
amit herein contained.
Quail.—Open hunting season, November fifteenth-January thirty-
first. Bag limit, twelve a day, one hundred fifty a season.
Turkey.—Open hunting season, November fifteenth-January thirty-
first. Bag limit, two a day, four a season.
Clapper rail.—Open hunting season, September first-November thir-
tieth. Bag limit, fifteen a day, no season limit.
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
