CHAPTER 176
An Act to amend and reenact § 22 of Chapter 38 of the Acts of Assembly
of 1947, approved January 80, 1947, which provided a charter for
the town of Narrows, the section relating to the appointment of a
trial justice and assistant trial justice, term of office, duties, and
compensation.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 22 of Chapter 38 of the Acts of Assembly of 1947, approved
January 30, 1947, be amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 22. * The Mayor of the town, with approval of the Council, shall
appoint a Trial Justice for the town, who shall thereafter try all viola-
tions of the ordinances of the town within its corporate limits and one
mile beyond the corporate limits of the town. Such Trial Justice shall be
provided with a place within said town to be used in the trial of such
cases and the administration of such office, and he shall hold office at the
pleasure of the Council, but his term shall not be beyond that of the
Mayor in office at the time of his appointment. All trials held in pursu-
ance to this section shall be held and conducted as criminal cases are
heard and tried by the Trial Justice of State courts, and appeal shall be
to the Circuit Court of Giles County. The compensation of the Trial
Justice shall be such as may hereafter be provided by the Council, and
as it may deem proper, and may be either by salary or fees.
The Mayor, with the approval of the Council, may appoint an
assistant Trial Justice, to act in the place of such Trial Justice, and in
his absence, which said assistant Trial Justice shall have the same author-
ity and duties as the Trial Justice.
The fees in connection with such cases, heard by such Trial Justice,
shall be the same as the fees provided by law for Trial Justices, and all
such fees, and all fines imposed by such Trial Justice, shall be collected
by him and paid into the treasury of the town, unless said town, by
ordinance, directs some other disposition thereof.
The Trial Justice, provided for hereunder, shall be appointed at the
first meeting of the Council held in the month of September, 1954, and
such Trial Justice shall serve at the will of the Council, but for a term
not exceeding that to which the Mayor has been elected, as hereinbefore
provided. |
CHAPTER 176
An Act to amend and reenact § 28-48 of the Code of Virginia, as to
penalties for violating provisions of five preceding sections. "HE 885}

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
Pa That § 28-48 of the Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted as
ollows:
28-48. Penalties for violating provisions of * five preceding sec-
tions.—Any person violating any cf the provisions of the * five preceding
sections shall be fined not less than twenty-five nor more than one hundred
dollars, or confined in jail not less than ten days nor more than six months
either or both; except that any person to whom a fishing license is granted,
who shall fail to keep the number or register mark displayed as provided
in 3 28-43, shall be fined not less than ten nor more than one hundred
ollars.
