An Act to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered
28-196.1, relating to oysters packaged for sale so as to prescribe a
maximum proportion of liquid and a method of determining such
proportion.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia be amended by adding a section num-
bered 28-196.1 as follows:
§ 28-196.1. It shall be unlawful to sell, offer for sale, or package
for sale oysters in any container or vessel in which the proportion of
liquid is more than five per centum of the weight of the oysters contained
therein. The quantity of liquid in such container shall be determined
by draining the oysters on a strainer or skimmer which has an area of
not less than three hundred square inches per gallon of oysters drained
and has perforations of at least one-fourth of an inch in diameter and
not more than one and one-fourth inches apart, or perforations of equiva-
lent areas and distribution. The oysters shall be distributed evenly over
the draining surface and drained for not less than five minutes. Any
person, firm, corporation or association violating the provisions of this
section shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction, punished
accordingly.
