An Act to amend and reenact § 4, as amended, of Chapter 6, of Chapter
163 of the Acts of Assembly of 1874-1875, approved March 11, 1875,
which section relates to the election of justices of the peace, their
terms of office, their qualifications, and how they shall sae a

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 4, as amended, of Chapter 6, of Chapter 163 of the Acts of
Assembly of 1874-1875, approved March 11, 1875, be amended and
reenacted as follows:
§ 4. There shall be elected by the qualified voters of * the city of
Petersburg, on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, nineteen
hundred five, and every four years thereafter, * sixteen justices of
the peace, * for a term of four years beginning on the first day * following
their election. * Justices of the peace elected hereunder shall continue in
office until their successors shall be qualified. Justices of the peace elected
hereunder shall qualify by taking the oath prescribed by law, before the
judge of the hustings court of the city, in term time or vacation, or before
the clerk of said court in his office. When such qualification is before the
judge he shall certify the fact to the clerk of said court, and the certificate
shall be entered by the clerk of said court in the order book of the court
on the law side thereof. When such qualification is before the clerk in his
office, the said clerk shall enter the fact in said order book.
