Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That section fifty-nine of chapter three hundred eighty-two of
the Acts of Assembly of nineteen hundred thirty-four, approved March
twenty-nine, nineteen hundred thirty-four, be amended and reenacted
as follows:
Section 59. Composition of school board; vacancies.—The school
board of the city of Hopewell shall consist of five trustees, qualified by
education or experience, who shall be elected by a majority vote of the
whole membership of the city council and shall serve for a term of three
years from the first day of July next following the date of their election
and until their successors shall have been appointed; provided that the
term of the trustees of the first school board elected hereunder shall be as
follows: One member for one year; two members for two years; two
members for three years, to be determined by lot among themselves.
Any vacancy thereafter occurring in said school board by expiration of
term of office or for any other reason, shall be filled by a majority vote
of the whole membership of the city council.
