Chap. 122.—An ACT to provide for the election and terms of office of the
Councilmen of the town of Chilhowie and to provide for the appointment of a
vice mayor for the town, (H 120]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. Notwithstanding any other provision of the charter of the
town, on the second Tuesday of June, nineteen hundred and forty-
eight, there shall be elected by the qualified voters of the town of
Chilhowie, six councilmen, who shall be electors of said town,
whose terms of office shall begin the first day of September suc-
ceeding their election. Of the six members elected to the council on
the second Tuesday in June, nineteen hundred and forty-eight,
those three members receiving the greater number of votes shall
hold office for a term of four years beginning September one, nine-
teen hundred and forty-eight, and until their duly elected successors
shall have qualified. The other three members shall serve for a
term of two years beginning September one, nineteen hundred
forty-eight, and until their duly elected successors shall have
qualified. In case of tie among any of the members lots shall be
cast among those tying to determine which one or ones shall hold
office for the term of four years. On the second Tuesday of June,
Nineteen hundred and fifty, and each two years thereafter there
shall be elected by the qualified voters of said town three council-
men who shall be electors of said town, and whose term of office
shall begin on the first day of September succeeding the election
and shall continue for four years thereafter and until their duly
elected successors shall have qualified.
The town council at its regular meeting in September, nineteen
hundred forty-eight, and every second year thereafter, shall elect
one of its members as vice mayor of the town, who shall exercise
all of the powers and duties of the mayor in event of the absence or
disability of the mayor.
2. Anemergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
