Chap. 85.—An ACT to amend and re-enact Sections 2 and 7 of Chapter 278 of the
Acts of Assembly of 1893-94, approved February 15, 1894, which chapter pro-
vided a new charter for the Town of Ashland, Sections 2 and 7 relating to the
municipal officers of the town. [H B 198}

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia :
1. That sections two and seven of chapter two hundred seventy-
eight of the Acts of Assembly of eighteen hundred ninety-three-ninety-
four, approved February fifteen, eighteen hundred ninety-four, be amend-
ed and re-enacted, as follows:
Section 2. The municipal officers of said town shall consist of a
mayor and seven councilmen, who shall constitute the council of the
town, and a sergeant, all of whom shall be residents and qualified voters
of the town, except the sergeant who, in the discretion of the cotincil,
need not be. On the second Tuesday in June, nineteen hundred forty-six,
and every two years thereafter, there shall be elected by the qualified
voters of the town, in the manner provided by law, a mayor and seven
councilmen, who shall qualify on or before the first day of September
next succeeding their election, and shall continue in office until their suc-
cessors have been elected and qualified. The sergeant shall be appointed
by the council and shall hold office during its pleasure ; provided that the
present sergeant shall continue to discharge the duties of the office until
the expiration of the term for which he was elected.
Section 7. The council shall be the judge of the election, qualifica-
tion and returns of its members.
