Chap. 54.—An ACT to convert Mary Washington College into a liberal arts col-
lege for women, which shall be under the supervision, management and control
of the Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia; and for the purpose to
amend the Code of Virginia by adding to Chapter 37 six new sections, desig-
nated, respectively 833-a, 833-b, 833-c, 833-d, 833-e, and 833-f. [H 61]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia be amended by adding to chapter thirty-
seven, six new sections numbered eight hundred thirty-three-a, eight
hundred thirty-three-b, eight hundred thirty-three-c, eight hundred thirty-
three-d, eight hundred thirty-three-e, and eight hundred thirty-three-f,
as follows:
Section 833-a. So soon as this act becomes effective as hereinafter
provided, Mary Washington College, at Fredericksburg, shall be con-
verted, in the manner hereinafter set forth, into a liberal arts college for
women, the title of which shall be “Mary Washington College of the Uni-
versity of Virginia” sometimes hereinafter called the ‘“College”) ; and
the supervision, management and control of the college shall pass from
the State Board of Education to the rector and visitors of the University
of Virginia; and the college shall thereafter be affiliated with the Uni-
versity of Virginia as an integral part thereof.
Section 833-b. The rector and visitors of the University of Virginia
shall succeed to all the property, property rights, duties, contracts and
agreements formally controlled by and vested in the State Board of
Education, the Virginia normal school board and the board of Virginia
teachers colleges, so far as the same relate to Mary Washington College.
The number of appointive members of the board of visitors of the
University of Virginia shall be increased by the addition of four members
to be appointed as provided by law.
Section 833-c. The President of the University of Virginia shall be
Chancellor of Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia
and its principal administrative officer. The rector and visitors of the
University of Virginia are charged with the care and preservation of all
property belonging to the College; and, with respect to the College, the
rector and visitors of the University of Virginia shall have the same pow-
ers as to granting degrees and with respect to the appointment and re-
moval of administrative officers, professors, agents, and servants, and the
making of regulations, that one now vested in them with respect to the
University of Virginia. The title of the chief local administrative officer
of the College shall be that of President.
Section 833-d. It shall be the duty of the rector and visitors of the
University of Virginia to convert Mary Washington College into a liberal
arts college for women, the title of which shall be “Mary Washington
College of the University of Virginia”, with the same standards of ad-
mission and graduation as obtain for male students in the College of Arts
and Sciences of the university located at Charlottesville; but the tuition
charges for residents and non-residents of this State, respectively, shail
not exceed those which are from time to time fixed by the rector and
visitors of the University of Virginia for male students in the college at
Charlottesville.
Section 833-e. The conversion, as hereinabove provided, of the Col-
lege into a liberal arts college for women shall be effected during a period
of not exceeding four years. Students who have entered Mary Washing-
ton College prior to the date when this act becomes effective may prose-
cute their courses to completion, and shall be entitled to certificates on
graduation as heretofore, byt, after that date, no student shall be admitted
to technical courses designed for the training of teachers except those
who can qualify for advance standing, leading to graduation within such
period of four years.
Section 833-f. Although affiliated with the University of Virginia
under the supervision, management and control of the board of visitors
of the University of Virginia, appropriations from the State are to be
made to Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia, to be
expended by the board of visitors of the University of Virginia for its use.
