Chap. 258.—An ACT to amend and re-enact Sections 1698-a and 1698-c of the Code
of Virginia, as amended, relating to hypnotic drugs. [S 234]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That sections sixteen hundred ninety-eight-a and sixteen hun-
dred ninety-eight-c of the Code of Virginia, as amended, be amended
and re-enacted, as follows:
Section 1698-a. In the following four sections, unless the context
otherwise requires, the words “dangerous drug’”’ shall include:
(a) Diethyl Barbituric Acid (barbital), by whatsoever trade name
or designation; or any compound, preparation, mixture or solution
thereof; or any salt or derivative thereof or of barbituric acid possessing
hypnotic properties or effects ;
(b) Sulfanilamide (para-animo-benzene-sulfoamide), Sulfathiax-
ole, Sulfapyridine, Sulfadiazine, Sulfaquanidine and sulfanilamide deriv-
atives by whatsoever trade name or designation; or any related com-
pound, preparation, mixture or salt, thereof; or any salt or derivative
thereof; or any preparation or mixture containing any of them.
(c) Hormones, or hormone drug preparations, whether of natural
origin, prepared from the so-called glands of internal secretion or en-
doctrine glands, or whether synthetically produced, by whatsoever trade
name or designation, or any compound or mixture thereof.
Section 1698-c. No person shall sell or give away any dangerous
drug to a consumer except on the prescription of a doctor of medicine,
doctor of dental surgery, or doctor of veterinary surgery, lawfully prac-
ticing his profession, which prescription may not be refilled; except that
prescriptions containing Barbituric Acid or derivatives thereof for per-
sons suffering from chronic afflictions or diseases, and prescriptions for
hormones, may, upon written authorizations on the face of the pre-
scription by the prescriber, be refilled a definite number of times, as i1ndi-
cated, or indefinitely if so specified by the prescriber; and except that
prescriptions containing in a mixture or compound a derivative of Bar-
bituric Acid, which derivative does not constitute the principal constitu-
ent of the mixture or compound, may be refilled unless the prescriber
specifies in writing on the face of the prescription that it shall not be
refilled. No person shall give away or distribute any sample package
containing a dangerous drug.
