Chap. 238.—An ACT to amend and re-enact Section 126, as amended, of the Code
of Virginia relating to county surveyors, so as to provide for the appointment
of superintendents of the poor for the several counties of the State. §[H 355]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That section one hundred twenty-six, as amended, of the Code of
Virginia, be amended and re-enacted, as follows:
Section 126. Surveyors and superintendents of the poor; how ap-
pointed ; term of office—The judge of each circuit court in term time
or vacation shall, upon the recommendation of the governing body in
each county in which he holds court, in the month of November, nineteen
hundred nineteen, and every fourth year thereafter, or whenever a
vacancy occurs, appoint for each county in which he holds his court one
county surveyor and one superintendent of the poor; but he may, if he
thinks proper, for reasons entered of record, reject the recommendations,
and unless the governing body recommends other persons suitable, in
his opinion, for the offices, within thirty davs after their first recommen-
dation has been rejected, he shall fill the offices, or either of them, by his
Own appointment in term-time or in vacation. Such officers shall enter
upon the duties of their offices upon the first day of January next suc-
ceeding their appointment, and shall hold their offices for the term of
four years, except that in case of an appointment made to fill a vacancy,
the term of office shall commence as soon as the officer shall qualify, and
shall continue for the unexpired portion of the term of four vears here-
inbefore specified.
