Chap. 378.—An ACT to amend the Code of Virginia by adding to Chapter 109
thereof two new Sections numbered 2726 and 2726-a, Section 2726 giving boards
of supervisors, or other governing bodies, power to have the county buildings
insured and to provide suitable rooms for county purposes; and Section 2726-a
giving such boards or governing bodies power to determine what annual allow-
ances shall be made to the sheriffs and county clerks; and to repeal Sections
2726-m to 2726-y, both inclusive, of Chapter 109 of the Code of Virginia, relating
to the same subjects. [H B 230]

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That the
Code of Virginia be amended by adding to chapter one hundred and nine
thereof, two new sections numbered twenty-seven hundred and twenty-
six and twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-a, as follows:
Section 2726. Insurance of county buildings; providing temporary
offices.—The board of supervisors, or other governing body, of every
county shall have power to cause the county buildings to be insured, in the
name of such board, or governing body, and their successors in office, for
the benefit of the county, if they deem it expedient; and if there are no
public buildings, to provide temporary suitable rooms for county pur-
poses.
Section 2726-a. Providing for the fixing of allowances to sheriffs
and clerks of counties——The board of supervisors, or other governing
body, of every county shall have power to determine what annual allow-
ances, payable out of the county treasury, shall be made to the sheriffs
and county clerks of their respective counties, so that, in counties having,
by the United States census latest preceding, a population, less than ten
thousand, the allowance to each of said officers shall not be less than three
hundred, nor more than six hundred, dollars; in counties having ten, and
less than fifteen, thousand, not less than four hundred, nor more than
seven hundred, dollars; in counties having fifteen, and less than twenty,
thousand, not less than five hundred, nor more than eight hundred,
dollars ; in counties having twenty, and less than thirty, thousand, not less
than six hundred, nor more than nine hundred, dollars ; in counties having
thirty, and less than forty, thousand, not less than seven hundred, nor
more than one thousand, dollars; in counties having forty, but not more
than fifty, thousand, not less than one thousand, nor more than fifteen
hundred, dollars; and in counties having over fifty thousand, not less
than twelve hundred, nor more than fifteen hundred, dollars; provided,
that the minimum and maximum amounts of the annual allowances tc
said officers in the following named counties shall be the amounts im-
mediately following the names of said counties and the mention of saic
officers, to-wit:
Accomack: sheriff and clerk severally, one thousand-fifteen hun-
dred.
Albemarle: sheriff and clerk severally, twelve hundred-fifteen hun-
dred.

Provided, further, that none of the provisions of this section shall
apply to any county operating under any form of county organization and
government provided for in chapter one hundred and nine-a of the Code
of Virginia.
Provided, further, that the provisions of this act relating to allow-
ances to sheriffs shall not supersede or in any wise affect the provisions
of an act “To provide for the payment of salaries to sheriffs of counties.”,
et cetera, known as Senate Bill number four, if said act is passed at this
session of the General Assembly.
2. Be it further enacted, That sections twenty-seven hundred and
twenty-six-m to twenty-seven hundred and twenty-six-y, both inclusive,
of chapter one hundred and nine of the Code of Virginia, are hereby
repealed.
