Chap. 298.—An ACT to amend the Code of Virginia by adding thereto a new
section numbered 698-b, providing how certain special elections and referenda
on proposed increases in school taxes may be called and held. [H B 433]

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That the
Code of Virginia be amended by adding thereto a new section num-
bered six hundred and ninety-eight-b, which new section shall read
as follows: .
Section 698-b. In any case where the approval of the qualified
veters is required to be obtained in a referendum before a tax author-
ized under the preceding section shall be levied, such referendum
may be called as follows: A resolution reciting the need for such
increased levy and asking for a referendum thereon may be adopted
by the board of supervisors or other governing body of such county,
and a certified copy thereof filed with the circuit court of such county
or the judge thereof in vacation; or a petition signed by not less than
five hundred qualified voters of the county requesting such increase
and asking for a referendum thereon may be filed with such court or
judge in vacation. Upon receipt of such resolution or petition, the
said court or judge in vacation shall make and enter of record an
order requiring such election or referendum to be held, and the re-
sults thereof shall be ascertained and certified as required by law.
