Chap. 143.—An ACT to authorize and empower the board of supervisors of
Wythe county, the county school board of Wythe county, and the school
board of Evansham School District of Wythe County, either singly or con-
jointly, to pay not to exceed $5,000.00 to H. L. Austin, for the benefit of
Harry Austin, to compensate the said Harry Austin for losses, injuries,
disfigurement and suffering resulting from certain burns. [H B 349]

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That the
board of supervisors of Wythe county, the county school board of
Wythe county, and the school board of the Evansham school district
of the said county, either singly or conjointly as they, or either of them,
may determine, are hereby authorized and empowered to pay such sum
or sums to H. L. Austin of the town of Wytheville, Virginia, the
father of Harry Austin, for the benefit of the said Harry Austin to
compensate him for losses, injuries, disfigurement and suffering re-
sulting from burns from nitric acid, through negligence or inadver-
tence, applied, on the eighteenth day of March, nineteen hundred and
thirty-seven, at the Wytheville high school, to the leg of the said Harry
Austin who was then a student at such school; provided, that the total
amount which may be paid under the provisions of this act by the said
board of supervisors, the said county school board and the school board
of the Evansham school district, shall not exceed in total amount the
sum of five thousand dollars. The payment herein authorized to be
made by the said board of supervisors may be from funds derived from
the general county levy; the payment or payments herein authorized
to be made by the said county school board and by the school board
of the Evansham school district, may be from funds provided for and
available to the said county school board and the said school board
of the Evansham school district, respectively, for the maintenance and
operation of public schools.
