Chap. 443.—An ACT to authorize the State Board of Education in its discretion
to provide for the payment of a certain percentage of the salaries of teachers in
the public schools in the State while such teachers are absent on account of
sickness or other disability; and to provide funds therefore. [S B 287]

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That the
State Board of Education be, and it is hereby, authorized and em-
powered in its discretion to provide for the payment of not in excess
of eighty per centum of the salaries of all teachers in the public schools
in this State during such periods of time as the said teachers shall be
absent on account of quarantine, sickness or other disability while
under contract. Provisions for such payments may be made by the
State Board of Education directly, or through the respective local
school boards of the counties, cities and towns in the State, and the
State Board of Education shall have the power and authority to enter
into such contracts and agreements with such person or persons, firms
or corporations and upon such terms and conditions as it may deter-
mine providing for the payment of such salaries.
In order to provide the necessary funds to enable the State Board
of Education to exercise the powers and authority herein conferred,
the said board is hereby authorized in its discretion and with the con-
currence of the local school board as expressed by resolution duly
entered of record to expend for each year of the biennium beginning
July first, nineteen hundred and thirty-six, from the moneys appro-
priated for the maintenance of the public free schools during such
period, a sum not in excess of three per centum of the teachers contract
salaries for each such respective year which said sum shall be set apart
before apportionment of funds is made to the public free schools of
the several counties, cities and towns of the State.
