Chap. 316.—An ACT to release and transfer to the United States all rights pos-
sessed by the State of Virginia, concerning wild life in a certain area of
28,000 acres in the George Washington National Forest, including the area
of 4,000 acres known as the “Big Levels Game Refuge.” [S B 199]

Whereas, the President of the United States of America, by virtue
of authority vested in him by the Congress of the United States, and by
proclamation under date of July sixth, nineteen hundred and thirty-
five, set aside and established as a game sanctuary and refuge, an
area containing approximately twenty-eight thousand acres of land
within the George Washington National Forest, Virginia; and,
Whereas, the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries of the

State of Virginia has recommended that Virginia release and transfer
to the United States all her rights concerning wild life within said area
of twenty-eight thousand acres, in order that the same may be devel-
oped as a game refuge under absolute Federal supervision and con-
trol; now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That there
be, and is hereby, released and transferred to the United States of
America all rights and authority which the State of Virginia may have
or possess, concerning wild life in that certain area of approximately
twenty-eight thousand acres within the bounds of the George Washing:
ton National Forest in Virginia, which was set aside and established
as a game sanctuary and refuge by the President of the United States
by proclamation under date of July sixth, nineteen hundred and thirty-
five, and which is more particularly described as follows:
Beginning at a point approximately three-tenths of a mile north of
Pekin, Virginia, where the road from Pekin to Cold Spring Station
intersects the right-of-way of the Norfolk and Western railroad;
thence in a northerly direction along the right-of-way of the Norfolk
and Western railroad for a distance of approximately three-tenths of a
mile to South river, sometimes called Saint Mary river; Thence up
South river in an easterly direction for a distance of approximately
two-tenths of a mile to a point where the river intersects the road lead-
ing from Pekin to Cold Spring Station; thence in a northerly direction
along the Pekin-Cold Spring Station road for a distance of approx-
imately five and six-tenths miles to a point where said road intersects
Virginia State road number six hundred and sixty; thence in an easterly
direction along the Cold Spring Station-Stuarts Draft road for a dis-
tance of approximately seven and four-tenths miles to a point about
one mile south of Stuarts Draft where this road intersects the How-
ardsville turnpike, designated as Virginia State road number six hun-
dred and ten; thence southeasterly along said road number six hundred
and ten for a distance of about four-tenths of a mile to a point where
this road is intersected by the road leading to Mountain lake; thence
in a southeasterly direction on the road leading to Mountain lake for
a distance of approximately seven-tenths of a mile to a point at the
southwest corner of said lake; thence in an easterly direction along an
old road on the south side of said lake for a distance of approximately
two miles to a point where this road intersects the Howardsville turn-
pike; thence in an easterly direction along the Howardsville turnpike
for a distance of approximately one mile to a point where this road
intersects Virginia State road number six hundred and thirty-three;
thence in a northerly direction along Virginia State road number six
hundred and thirty-three for a distance of approximately one mile to
Beula Church, where said road intersects Virginia State road number
‘six hundred and thirty-four; thence easterly along said road number
six hundred and thirty-four to a point where it intersects the Howards-
ville turnpike, designated Virginia State road number six hundred and
ten; thence in an easterly direction along said road number six hun-
dred and ten for a distance of approximately one mile to a point where
this road intersects Virginia State road number six hundred and sixty-
four; thence in a southerly direction along State road number six hun-
dred and sixty-four for a distance of approximately eight and six-
tenths miles to a point on the summit of the Blue Ridge mountains
where this road crossed the Augusta-Nelson county line; thence in a
northwesterly direction along the Augusta-Nelson county line which is
the top of the Blue Ridge mountains for a distance of approximately
four and three-tenths miles to Bald mountain; thence in a south-
westerly direction along the Augusta-Nelson county line for a distance
of approximately five and three-tenths miles to Lone Tree; thence in a
northwesterly direction along the Augusta-Nelson county line to a
point that is common to Augusta, Nelson, and Rockbridge counties,
which is approximately one-fourth of a mile distant from Lone Tree;
thence in a northerly direction along the hydrographic divide between
Spy Run and Groahs creek for a distance of approximately two and
three-tenths miles to the point of beginning.
