Chap. 271.—An ACT providing for the establishment of fire zones or districts
within the several counties of this State; the establishment of fire departments
therein, and the equipment of the same with fire fighting apparatus, and to
provide for the levy of a tax on property real and personal within such dis-
tricts subject to taxation for the maintenance and operation of the same.

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That the
boards of supervisors of the several counties of this State be, and are
hereby, authorized and empowered to create and establish by defined
metes and bounds, fire zones or districts within the said counties within
which may be located and established one or more fire departments, to
be equipped with apparatus for fighting fires and protecting property
within such zones or districts from loss or damage by fire.
2. In the event of the creation of such zones or districts, the board
of supervisors of such counties, or the county manager or county execu-
tive thereof, is hereby empowered to acquire real or personal property
to be devoted to the uses aforesaid, and shall prescribe rules and regu-
lations for the proper management, control and conduct thereof, and
said board shall also be empowered to contract with, or secure the
services of any individual corporation, organization or municipal cor-
poration for such fire protection as may be required.
3. To raise funds for the purposes aforesaid, the board of super-
visors of any county within which such zones or districts shall be
established may and is hereby authorized and empowered to levy a tax
of not exceeding ten (10) cents on the hundred dollars of all property
real and personal within such zones or districts subject to taxation,
which said tax shall be extended and collected as other county taxes
are extended and collected.
4. The amount realized from such levy shall be kept separate from
all other monies of the county and shall be applied to no other purpose
than the maintenance and operation of the fire departments the estab-
lishment of which is herein provided for.
5. An emergency existing, this act shall be in force from its passage.
