1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That it shal
he wnlawfiul for anv sheriff. sergeeant. constable. high constable, or any
deputy or any such officer to directly or indirectly purchase effects sold
under a writ by said officer or deputy; and that no such officer or his
deputy shall act as auctioneer or common crier except when selling under
a writ, unless he first obtains a license to conduct the business of an
auctioneer or common crier. Any violation of this act shall be pun-
ishable by a fine of not less than one hundred nor more than five hundred
dollars.
