Chap. 191.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 9 of chapter three hundred
and forty-two of the Acts of Assembly of nineteen hundred and thirty-two,
entitled an act to revise, simplify, rearrange and consolidate into one act,
which shall constitute and be designated and cited as “The Motor Vehicle
Code of Virginia,” the various statutes of the Commonwealth concerning the
registration and licensing of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, the
licensing of chauffeurs, the collection of fees and disposition of funds collected,
the operation of vehicles on the public roads, highways, streets and alleys,
the Division of Motor Vehicles and the director of said division, the powers
and duties of said division and director, and the penalties for violations of the
provisions of certain such statutes; and to repeal all statutes and acts in
conflict with the provisions of this act. [H B 209]

1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia, That section
nine of chapter three hundred and forty-two of the Acts of Assembly
of nineteen hundred and thirty-two, entitled an act to revise, simplify,
rearrange and consolidate into one act which shall constitute and be
designated and cited as “The Motor Vehicle Code of Virginia,” the
various statutes of the Commonwealth concerning the registration and
licensing of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, the licensing of
chauffeurs, the collection of fees and disposition of funds collected, the
operation of vehicles on the public roads, highways, streets and alleys,
the Division of Motor Vehicles and the director of said division, the
powers and duties of said division and director, and the penalties for
violations of the provisions of certain such statutes; and to repeal all
statutes and acts in conflict with the provisions of this act, be amended
and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
Section 9. Stopping vehicles; inspection of registration cards,
licenses, permits and vehicles—(a) The operator of any motor vehicle,
trailer or semi-trailer shall stop upon request or signal of any peace
officers, who shall be in uniform or shall exhibit his badge or other
sign of authority, and shall, upon request, exhibit his registration card,
or operator’s license card, or chaufteur’s license permit, or temporary
instruction permit, and shall write his name in the presence of such
peace officer, if so required for the purpose of establishing his identity.
(b) Any peace officer, who shall be in uniform or who shall exhibit
is badge or other sign of authority, shall have the right to stop any
notor vehicle, trailer, or semi-trailer, upon request or signal, for the
urpose of inspecting the said motor vehicle, trailer or semi-trailer as
» its equipment and operation, its manufacturer’s serial or engine
umber, its contents or load, if such motor vehicle, trailer or semi-
railer is a property carrying vehicle, and for the purpose of securing
uch other information as may be necessary. ,
(c) Any peace officer, or division officer or employee, who shall

ave the right to inspect any motor vehicle, trailer or semi-trailer in
ny public garage or repair shop, for the purpose of locating stolen
notor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, and for investigating the
itle and registration of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, and
‘or such purpose, the owner of any such garage or repair shop shall
yermit any such peace officer or division officer or employee without let
yr hindrance to make investigations as herein authorized.
